As part of the Aerospace Education program, cadets are immersed in all aspects of flight and the space. Cadets learn about basic flight physics, types of aircraft, weather, the history of the space program, and much more. Cadets follow a systematic program that focuses on the topics and skills necessary to learn about aerospace and to teach others. Activities include tours of Air Force bases, visits to reserach laboratories, and orientation flights. Aerospace Education also emphasizes the study of space operations, space environment, astronomy, and space technology. To this extent, cadets receive training in model rocketry (since rockets are the basice means of transporting payloads to space). Various National Cadet Special Activities offer cadets the opportunity to design aerospace systems, work with aerospace leaders, and receive one-on-one training in various aerospace fields. |
In addition, the Maryland Wing hosts a Powered Solo Academy each year (where cadets can earn their Solo Wings), as well as the Maryland Wing Glider Academy (which familiarizes cadets with glider operations). The majority of cadet orientation flights take place aboard Cessna aircraft like the one picture above. Cadets receive five powered flights and five glider flights free of charge with their membership. Furthermore, cadets can receive hands-on training in airport operations thorugh Flight Line Marshalling courses. Cadets and senior members work on the flight line directing aircraft to and from the runway and their parking spots. Pilots are directed by cadets who have them perform their operations in accordance will all safety practices. This operation is truly thrilling for cadets. The Maryland Wing website contains links to various aerospace-related sources cointaining an immesurable wealth of information. Feel free to visit the website.
